Periodontal Disease, which includes gingivitis and periodontitis, is an inflammation and /or infection of the gums and bone around your dog's teeth. It's caused by bacteria that accumulate in the mouth, forming soft plaque that later hardens into tarter. If untreated, periodontal disease can eventually lead to tooth loss and pain. In dogs we now have a new Dental Vaccine-called Porphyromonas Bacterin-that can help prevent periodontal disease. The Dental Vaccine is not a substitute for brushing and good home dental care but a new weapon in our fight against dental disease. It is especially important in Toy and Small Breed dogs generally under 30lbs. which seem to get the worst dental disease and brachycephalic (short faced dogs) like pugs, boxers and bulldogs that get gingivitis and excessive gum tissue. The vaccine is given initially and then 3 weeks later followed by a yearly booster. Please call us if you have more questions about the Dental Vaccine.
